Words to live by

Daily writing prompt
Do you have a quote you live your life by or think of often?

I have a few quotes I can think of, starting with my Mom saying “be nice be sweet” before we left for any event. I guess that was one way of telling us to be good. What I would give to hear her say those words again, she’s been gone for almost 25 years…

The next quote, prayer, or saying that runs through my mind during times of stress or conflict is “Lord let me do what I need to do, be what I need to be, and say what I need to say”. This can be interpreted in so many ways, but it helps my center myself with thinking before acting many times. And, helps me not spew the first thing that comes to mind which is not always kind, helpful, or something to be proud of. But it was also what was running through my mind what I took the responsibility of shooting a coyote on the farm with an old one shot rifle, in the dead of winter, after we found a dead calf eaten by coyotes. It took a few leaps and was dead when I got to it. It was a first moving live target, but I knew I could do what had to be done when it mattered.

It is incredible how a short phrase can hold so much memory and longing. And I like how you connected that to your prayer. It indicates how those early teachings of your mom continue to shape who you are today.

Thank you. We can only do our best and face what life throws at us, with whatever courage we can summon up. 🙂
