Let my little garden grow

4/24/2026

While waiting with baited breath for the rain the weather stations have been talking about for days, I decided to take this opportunity to add a few seeds to the rows. So today, a packet of snow peas are taking a dirt nap, along with some Roma flat beans, to finish out a row of previously planted lima beans. Who knew there were so few seeds in the packets these days. So as usual, we get less while paying more.

Anyway, the rows of green beans are a few inches tall, and the okra is starting to peep out of the soil. We definitely need the rain, and I am too cheap to start watering at this stage of the game. The only bed that I water right now is the raised bed, which has a good stand of beets and turnips, with a scattered offering of carrots. I have added a few cabbage, dill, and tomato seeds to various upper tiers and hoping for the best.

On a smaller scale, I did germinate some unlabeled seeds I saved from previous ……um…vegetable, thinking either sweet pepper or tomato seeds. This I did by dampening a paper towel and sliding it in a plastic sleeve and waited for the magic. After keeping damp and warm, the sprouts started emerging. When several were big enough to pick out of the paper towel without damaging, they were planted in potting soil and put on the front porch, sheltered from too much wind and sun. Tho still in the two leaf stage, I have hopes of them growing and being able to determine what mystery seed I have coaxed to life.

I wish I had my great grandmother’s green thumb. That woman had true talent. She could grow a full rose bush from a birthday flower delivery. The patience it takes to nurture those stems is almost a lost talent in this instant gratification world, and I am working on it one step at a time with a little everyday courage.

What would you plant in your garden if you had the time and space?
